Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
Pick up from your hotel between 7am and 8am.
Port Moresby has an intriguing history and PNG as a whole has an incredible cultural history. Even to this day, PNG consists of over 800 entirely different language groups and an equally extensive diversity of culture and dress. This tour will showcase this history and culture, with a visit to the impressive National Museum and Art Gallery which hosts displays from all 22 provinces incorporating some truly unique artifacts, including carvings, paintings, masks, headdress, totems, shields, spears and drums to name but a few.
The gallery also includes modern art which showcases some extraordinarily talented modern artists, inspired by their traditional roots and tribal arts along side an interactive audio experience “Voices From the War” which is a valuable first hand account of the effects of the second world war on Papua New Guinians.
To complement the National Museum and Art Gallery “Voices from the War”, experience, we will visit the immaculately maintained, serene yet emotionally moving, Bomana War Cemetery and Memorial. As the largest war cemetery in the Pacific, Bomana is the permanent resting place for 3824 soldiers from Australian, Papua New Guinea, United Kingdom and other allied forces.
Of course no trip to Port Moresby would be complete without a visit to the Ela Beach foreshore. Recently remodeled for the historic APEC meeting in late 2018, the precinct offers many activities, beaches and displays, including totems and public art, resulting in a busy and vibrant hub that offers our clients many photo opportunities.
Your tour will also include a trip to the 4 mile markets. Although compact, these markets offer you a range of well priced souvenirs, from carvings to jewelry to clothing to bilums. You can find traditional weapons here like spears and bows and arrows and even stone axes for that very different wall display at home … almost guaranteed to be unique to you! We will also visit an outdoor art gallery where you can negotiate for the purchase of a “one of a kind” painting if you wish, or simply take in the spectacle of all these talented artists displaying their skills.
